                                 Ankylosing Spondylitis and its Treatment

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a chronic progressive form of arthritis with inflammation and eventual fusing of joints, particularly in the spine.  The disease usually begins between the ages of 10 to 30.  It has been found that 90% of the sufferers are male.

Ankylosing Spondylitis usually presents as vague mid and low back pain with stiffness, particularly after prolonged rest.  The pain may radiate into the buttocks and the rear of the legs.  There is often a history of long standing back stiffness and pain which, at night, may require the sufferer to get up and walk about.

There is often marked morning back stiffness. Symptoms of Spondylitis become progressively worse and the neck, shoulders and hips may be involved, along with other joints.

On X-ray there are changes to the spine characteristics of Ankylosing Spondylitis.  There is also a laboratory marker in the blood known as HLA-B27 antigen.  Its presence is highly correlated with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Treatment
Posture maintaining exercises should be started as soon as possible.  Myopax is particularly effective at soothing and relaxing stiff spinal muscles to increase mobility and enable posture exercises to take place.  Since morning stiffness is a key problem with Spondylitis, morning back massage with Myopax is recommended.

Pain which may disrupt sleep can be alleviated by a nightly massage with Austral-Balm which has marked analgesic and anti-inflammatory actions.  The long term aim of back exercises is to preserve maximum motion and function.  Both Myopax and Austral-Balm can assist Ankylosing Spondilitis sufferers in maintaining their vital back exercises.

If you have any specific queries about Ankylosing Spondylitis or its management with Myopax or Austral-Balm please feel free to contact us by using our Product Feedback Form.

Case Study

Adam is an Ankylosing Spondylitis sufferer in his mid twenties.  It took years to properly diagnose Adam's condition.

Adam endures very marked stiffness and a large amount of pain with his AS. Typically for an Ankylosing Spondylitis sufferer the mornings are the most difficult for Adam, taking him one and  a half hours each day to get started.

Adam is taking a near maximum level of medications for his pain including high dose slow release morphine tablets, meperidine (pethidine) injections and sleeping tablets.

Recently Adam started using Myopax added to a warm bath as a new treatment for his condition.

"Myopax baths have improved my Ankylosing Spondylitis by 20%" Adam said.  Adam is now able to perform his posture exercises more freely, and the mornings are now a little less daunting.
