Back Pain and its Treatment

Back Pain is a very common condition of diverse causes, and varies from minor pain in the lower or upper back to major spinal injury.

A key feature is correct diagnosis, and because the spine is such a complex structure, diagnosis can be difficult or delayed.

To assist diagnosis it may be useful to write down all aspects of when, where and how the pain started, whether it is lower or upper back pain, what relieves the pain, etc and supply the information to your doctor methodically. More than one medical opinion may be required.

As stated by Arthur Hall MD "many mistaken diagnoses originate in the narrow viewpoint of specialists who fail to realize that the cause of the back pain may lie outside their specialty" [1].

Although spinal muscle spasm is a protective mechanism, in many cases it only serves to add a great deal of pain and discomfort to the condition.

Myopax is suitable for helping the treatment of muscle spasm in many cases. The lavender and rosemary components of Myopax have a soothing anti-spasmodic action.

If the condition has an inflammatory component (such as arthritis) or if there is marked muscle soreness due to spasm then Austral-Balm may be appropriate, as part of your back pain treatment program. In cases where oral non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been used, Austral-Balm may allow the NSAID dosage to be reduced, or ceased. As with all medication changes with upper or lower back pain, discuss them with your doctor.

Faulty body mechanics are often associated with dull back pain, or in the worsening of an existing condition.

Corrective exercises and restoration of good standing, sitting and sleeping postures may bring relief from upper or lower back pain in many cases [2].

Austral-Balm and Myopax are non prescription medications.
