Sports Injury Treatment
Austral-Balm
is well suited for
prevention and treatment of
most types of sport injury
and is IOC
(International Olympic
Committee) compliant.
It is designed for rapid
penetration through the
dermis and delivers two
anti-inflammatory compounds,
wintergreen and emu oil.
Wintergreen oil, from a
native American plant,
delivers the same active
compound as aspirin
(salicylic acid) to inflamed
tissues (Native Americans
have used the plant for the
same purpose for centuries).
The second compound is emu
oil, which has demonstrated
potent anti-inflammatory
activity in recent studies
[1],[2].
Austral-Balm may be applied
as soon as possible after an
injury has occurred and used
in conjunction with ice and
compression. An
appropriately trained person
should always assess an
injury, and overview your
sports injury treatment.
Austral-Balm may be used as
a pre match application on
chronic or suspected
injuries as a preventative
measure.
Here are some ideas on
sporting injury management.
| |
- |
With acute injuries
such as torn
ligaments, muscle
strains, and
bruises, the key is
to start icing as
soon as possible. Ice
relieves pain and slows
blood flow, thereby reducing
internal bleeding and
swelling. |
|
| |
- |
Apply ice on the
injured area for 10
to 20 minutes then
reapply it every 2
waking hours (more
often if necessary).
More than 20 minutes
of ice may cause
tissue damage. |
|
| |
- |
If you start to feel
mild discomfort
whilst exercising
from what may be an
overuse injury,
apply ice several
times a day for the
next 48 hours. |

To minimise swelling use
RICE ie. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
Rest the

apply
|
|
Ice |
|

|
|
Compression |
|
|
|
Elevate the
injured extremity
above heart level |
| |
|
|
|
| |
- |
Keep using ice (when
needed) for at least 48
hours as part of an
effective sport injury
treatment. Only when
swelling has subsided should
you use heat. |
|
| |
- |
Apply heat as dry
heat (heating pad or
lamp) or moist heat
(bath, hot water
bottle, spa, heatpack). If
unsure check with your
doctor or physiotherapist
about the correct heat
treatment for your injury.
Don't use heat if there is
inflammation or if you have
a fever. |
|
| |
- |
For most overuse
injuries, rest a day
or two then try to
exercise the
affected area at an
intensity that won't
cause pain. |
|
| |
- |
Muscles and tendons
heal slowly (longer
than bones) usually
80 to 95% of
original strength in
three to six month
[3]. |

Austral-Balm is a non
prescription medication.
