Austral-Balm contains
wintergreen oil, a
natural aspirin like
compound, which, because
it is applied externally
is less likely to cause
the stomach irritation
associated with oral
anti-inflammatories.
Research shows that
wintergreen is tissue
specific
[1];
its main compound methyl
salicylate “prefers”
tissues compared to
blood, with levels up to
30 times higher in
muscle tissue than blood
levels. This means that
the active compound
works where it is
applied rather than
being quickly removed by
the blood supply.
Austral-Balm also
contains emu oil, which
has demonstrated potent
anti-inflammatory action
[2]
in several studies
together with extensive
clinical evidence and an
extensive safety record.

Contains 2 Anti-Inflammatories |
| |
- |
The wintergreen used
by Nutri-Pharm
is over 99% methyl
salicylate - upon
absorption this
converts extensively
to salicylic acid.
This is the same
compound which
aspirin is converted
to upon its
absorption, giving
wintergreen similar
anti-inflammatory
properties to
aspirin. |
|
| |
- |
Emu oil - the TGA
(Therapeutic Goods
Administration of
Australia) has now
approved emu oil to
be listed as an
anti-inflammatory
for conditions such
as arthritis. |

Very Fast Action - 3
Absorption Enhancers |
| |
- |
Alcohol - defats the
skin surface and
speeds up
absorption. |
|
| |
- |
Eucalyptus oil -
contains cineol - a
known absorption
enhancer. |
|
| |
- |
Emu oil - very high
penetration
properties with
human skin. Appears
to “carry” other
compounds (such as
wintergreen) with
it. |
|
Austral-Balm is a one phase
product i.e. a liquid with
fully dissolved
ingredients. A one phase
system is generally absorbed
faster than a multi phased
system (i.e. a cream - which
is oil droplets in water).
The boundary layers between
oil and fat phases tend to
slow the rate of absorption
of active compounds in the
cream.
The eucalyptus and
peppermint oils in
Austral-Balm both increase
micro-circulation
[3]
and a feeling of warmth,
which may assist in a number
of conditions.

effect
should occur
within about
1 minute of
application.
If the
Austral-Balm
is
uncomfortably
warm, reduce
the number
of drops for
your next
application.
Apply once
or twice
daily for
arthritis or
chronic
injuries and
up to four
times daily
for acute
injuries.
Arthritis
Austral-Balm may be used regularly to treat arthritic symptoms. If you are currently taking oral Non Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Naprosyn®, Indocid®, Voltaren®, etc. Austral-Balm may allow you to reduce or even stop your oral medication. Consult your doctor for advice on changing your usual medication. Arthritis is a complex family of diseases, but a lot of new information is emerging that can assist you in treating your condition. Sports Use
Competition Compliance
Austral-Balm contains NO anabolic compounds, NO stimulants or caffeine, and NO growth hormone or any other substances banned by the Australian Sports Drug Agency or the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Austral-Balm is listed with the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration and may be freely used during local and international competition. Austral-Balm is ASDA and IOC compliant. For further information see the ASDA site.
Chronic Injuries or Injury Prevention
Apply once or twice daily. Apply half an hour before training or competition. If taping a joint where Austral-Balm has been applied, remove any excess Austral-Balm with a cloth before using the tape.
If using as a post-training or competition rub down, warm down exercises and a shower are recommended first.
Acute Injuries
After the injury is appropriately examined, Austral-Balm may be gently applied to the area. The area may then be treated with traditional "RICE" treatment i.e. rest, ice, compression and elevation. Austral-Balm may be used with bandaging, although occlusive (waterproof) bandaging is not recommended.
Austral-Balm is not recommended on broken skin or open wounds.
Austral-Balm is a Highly Massageable Product
This allows for two modes of therapy rather than just one. This combines the benefits of massage and therapeutics. It can also be applied without massage if required.
Natural Ingredients with Long Therapeutic Histories
Emu oil has been used therapeutically by Australian Aboriginals for centuries, likewise wintergreen has been used by Native Americans for centuries. The safety profiles of both compounds are well known.
Side Effects and Cautions
Austral-Balm is well tolerated. Excessive warming of the skin may occur. Use sparingly on hot skin or muscles until individual tolerance is determined. Rashes or skin irritation may occur, if so, cease using. Keep out of reach of children. For external use only. Use with caution when applied often to large areas of the body. Consult your doctor if you are currently taking anti-coagulant (blood thinning) medication before using Austral-Balm.
